One of the stories of how the Mid-Autumn Festival begun is one filled with love. A hero named Yi was rewarded with the elixir of immortality after shooting down nine out of the ten suns that caused a great disaster to his people. He gave this to his wife Chang’e. But when somebody tried to steal it, she swallowed it and flew to the moon so she could still live near her husband. Yi grew sad and offered sacrifices and displayed her favorite dishes to her. People learned about their story, grew sympathetic, and soon participated in his sacrifices.
Many women pray to Chang’e to help fulfill their romantic wishes. In some parts of China, dances are held for young people to meet their future life companions. In other places, mooncakes are shared in the family, lanterns are released into the sky, elaborate dishes are made, and games of different celestial stories are played.
